4 Ways to Improve your Emotional Well-Being
If you've been feeling a little low lately, you are not alone. Many people are experiencing subtle or extreme shifts in their normal state of being. These shifts might manifest as feelings of overwhelm, sadness, helplessness, exhaustion, confusion, and more. This is understandable, given everything happening in the world. Just as collective consciousness exists, so does collective grief.
So, how are you taking care of yourself during these times?
Here are a few simple self-care tips that can drastically shift your mood and emotional well-being:
Social Detox:
I understand that staying connected through social media and keeping up with the news is important to some. However, many people are unaware of the toll that constant exposure to information can take on their psyche. The nervous system can easily become overwhelmed when you're scrolling and smiling at a cute baby or pet video one moment, only to encounter something traumatic the next. This cycle continues the more you engage.
Limiting your time on social media can help ease your nervous system in the long run. This detox can be as drastic as deactivating your accounts for a while or as gentle as gradually reducing your screen time.
Touch Some Grass
Literally. You can do this at any time of day, for as long as you wish. Earthing or grounding—standing barefoot on the earth—can improve sleep, reduce stress, lower cortisol levels, and more.
Get in the Sun Daily
Whether it's sitting outside for a few minutes or taking a long walk on sunny days, getting sunlight can help reduce stress, improve sleep quality, and boost your mood, among many other benefits.
Act on Your Highest Point of Excitement as Often as You Can
And I mean this in the simplest way possible. You don’t need to “know your purpose in life” to do this. In any given moment, take a second to feel what your body wants. What would bring you joy right now? Is it something you can do? Then do it.
For example, if you crave a mid-day walk, take it.
If you feel the urge to skip and prance during your walk, do it!
If you want to lay in the grass and bask in the sun, why not?
If you want to try something new but feel nervous about taking the leap, make it!
If the world is teaching us anything, it’s that time is fleeting. We never know what tomorrow will bring. All we have in each moment are those moments!
So please, take care of yourself. Do what makes you happy. And remember, with everything happening in the world, you matter. Your feelings are valid. Your struggles are valid. And you are allowed to experience joy and happiness even in these hard times without feeling guilty about it.
With Love,
Kay
